In a current political cycle (pre-midterm elections, at least) that has treated the first strains of conscientious dissent as evidence of a mental defect, the need for a spinal transplant operation or both, a film like Emilio Estevez's Bobby — teeming with idealism and a palpable romanticism, and necessarily bristling with the energy of a true believer — can carry a lot of weight, depending on what one wants from it.
